PRRM Chair Wigberto “Ka Bobby” Tañada was recently elected as Chairperson of the Boards of three oil mill corporations under the United Coconut Planters Bank – Coconut Industry Investment Fund (UCPB-CIIF). Last September 2011, Ka Bobby formally accepted the posts that include Granexport Manufacturing Corp. (GRANEX), Southern Coconut Oil Mill (SOLCOM), and the Ilagan Coconut Industries Inc. (ILICOCO). They are part of the oil mills group owned by the CIIF which were acquired using the coconut levy funds during the Marcos period and sequestered by the government in 1986.
He will be joined by another former Senator, Ramon Magsaysay Jr., who was tasked to head the three other CIIF corporations – San Pablo Manufacturing Corp. (SPMC), Southern Luzon Coconut Oil Mill (SOLCOM), and Legazpi Oil Coco Inc (LEGOIL).
The corporations are involved in the processing of copra into coconut oil and the development of other traditional coconut products such as conversion of coconut husks, shell and water into commercial uses. They are also engaged in the production of dessicated coconut, deactivated carbon and crude natural oil mainly for export to the global market.
As one of the most steadfast advocates of Philippine coconut industry development, Ka Bobby will bring in a proven track record with his years of involvement in the coconut sector and an unquestionable integrity in improving the lives of millions of impoverished coconut farmers. His commitment to the cause has been long-standing, from the time he became a legislator of the country, up to this moment where he continues to seek justice for the recovery of the coconut levy funds.
PRRM and its partners are encouraged by this development. We believe that Ka Bobby’s leadership in the CIIF is a step in the right direction to finally transform into reality the potential of the coconut industry as an engine of growth and rural development.
Congratulations Ka Bobby!
