Rural Reconstruction Family Visit

by Patrick G. San Juan, Development Cooperation and Media Relations Associate

To usher in the year 2010, PRRM hosted a three-day visit of two colleagues from the rural reconstruction family in the Asian region. Dr. Lau Kin Chi of the Chinese rural reconstruction and a professor at the Lingnan University in Hong Kong, and Dr. Arjun Karki, President of the Rural Reconstruction Nepal (RRN), were in the Philippines last January 4-6, 2010 for a series of meetings with the PRRM Board of Trustees and officers.

Board Chairperson Wigberto Tañada, along with Trustees Horacio Morales and Edicio dela Torre joined PRRM President Isagani Serrano and the members of the Management Committee in welcoming and sharing insights with the visitors. The meeting provided an opportunity for everyone to learn more about the history, programs, projects and challenges of each national movement. It also focused on identifying ways of working together towards strengthening the global rural reconstruction movement and positioning it as a framework for sustainable development at the international level.

The visit also included a trip to the International Institute for Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) facility in Silang, Cavite where they were able to interact with the IIRR staff, as well as take a brief tour around the Memorial Garden and the Y.C. James Yen Museum.

This undertaking is viewed as a springboard for future cooperation between the Chinese rural reconstruction, RRN, IIRR and the PRRM. Everyone is looking forward to working together in rebuilding and strengthening the rural reconstruction alliance at the global level.
