RP volunteer agency confers award to PRRM

RP volunteer agency confers award to PRRMThe PRRM is this year’s recipient of the Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award, conferred annually by the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA), an attached agency of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA).

In a letter dated 4 December 2007, PNVSCA Executive Director Joselito C. de Vera informed PRRM President Ding Navarro of the National Volunteer Month Steering Committee’s decision to confer the Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award to PRRM as an organization that has “consistently contributed talents, efforts and resources to volunteer work” in its sustainable development work in the provinces (Outstanding Volunteers To Be Recognized).

Awarding ceremonies will be held on 12 December 2007 at 2:00 PM at the Palawan Hall of EDSA Shangri-La in Mandaluyong City.

Since its founding in 1952, the PRRM has organized and mobilized community residents into volunteer groups for the development of their communities. These groups were known as RRMAs (rural reconstruction men’s associations), RRWAs (rural reconstruction women’s associations) and RRYAs (rural reconstruction youth associations). They were at the forefront of implementing PRRM’s four-fold approach of education, livelihood, health, and self-governance. Fifty five years hence, PRRM continues this tradition of training and mobilizing community leaders to become volunteers in the fields of sustainable agriculture, coastal resource management, renewable energy, community health, women and youth development, among others.

These volunteers are now at the helm of PRRM’s partner national federations namely: SAKAHAN (Pambansang Samahan ng mga Magsasaka para sa Likas-Kayang Pananakahan), NIUGAN (Nagkakaisang Ugnayan ng Maliliit na Magsasaka at Manggagawa sa Niyugan), PUMALU-MV (Pinalakas na Ugnayan ng Maliliit na Mangingisda sa Luzon, Mindanao at Visayas), DALUYONG (Daluyan at Ugnayan ng Organisasyong Pangkababaihan sa Kanayunan, and the PRRYA (Philippine Rural Reconstruction Youth Association).
