Help Coconut Farmers, Tañada Asks Gawad Quezon Awardees

By Nappy R. Manegdeg

PRRM Chairperson Bobby Tañada delivering his keynote address.

Tulungan natin ibangon ang kabuhayan ng ating mga magniniyog, hindi lang sa usaping karapatang sibil at pulitika, kung hindi pati na rin sa ekonomiya.” This was the keynote message of PRRM Chair Wigberto “Ka Bobby” E. Tañada during the awarding ceremonies of the Quezon Medalya ng Karangalan held last 19 August 2011 at the Quezon Convention Center, Lucena City.

(L-R) Quezon Governor David C. Suarez, Ka Bobby, Quezon 3rd District Representative Danilo Suarez and Senator Francis Escudero.

Tañada laments that coconut farmers in the province and in the country continue to reel from hunger and poverty even though the coconut industry continues to earn much-needed dollars from coconut product exports.

Tañada said that every Quezonian should strive to be like the late President Manuel L. Quezon who put the interests of the country first before his own. Quoting Quezon, Tañada said “My loyalty to my party ends when my loyalty to my country begins”. President Quezon put premium on national freedom and sacrifice saying, “I prefer a government run like hell by Filipinos to a government run like heaven by Americans”.

Quezon Governor David “Jay-Jay” C. Suarez led the provincial government in welcoming the awardees and guests to the event. Senator Francis Escudero also graced the awarding ceremony.

The Medalya ng Karangalan, in commemoration of the birth of President Quezon, is an annual search of the Quezon provincial government for the most outstanding Quezonians who have excelled in various fields and specialization, bringing honor and prestige to the province and to the country. Ka Bobby received the same award in 1996 when he was the Representative of the 4th Congressional District of Quezon province.
